Looks like the iPad is getting its own operating system with iPadOS
Apple is going to split up the iPad from iOS
It looks like the iPad is getting its own operating system at WWDC. First reported by 9to5Mac, Apple accidentally leaked coding with the name "iPadOS" that confirms it is splitting up the iPad off iOS.
This means a number of things. First, this will give Apple free reign to update the iPad's operating system without interfering with iOS, which is mostly focused on the iPhone experience. Second, this could finally open up the iPad to reach the full hardware potential Apple introduced with the iPad Pro.
Details on what iPadOS will introduce are scarce at the moment, but Apple should announce the new software and all of the new features it will bring to the iPad at WWDC. One feature 9to5Mac does note will come with the new software is support for multiple windows, something users have been asking for for years.
We'll find out more during the WWDC keynote which kicks off at 10AM PT.
