Here's what you need to know about Marvel's Avengers

The new game will feature an original story and introduce a universe players can enjoy for years to come.

Square Enix's mysterious Marvel game, previously known as The Avengers Project, finally has an official title: Marvel's Avengers. The game is expected to be available for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 and launch sometime in 2019.

It's been confirmed that more information about Marvel's Avengers will be revealed on June 10 at 6 p.m. PT.

What is Marvel's Avengers?

Marvel's Avengers was first announced in 2017, but with Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame taking the limelight, the project just sort of faded into the shadows.

Developed by Crystal Dynamics—the developer behind the 2011 Tomb Raider reboot—Marvel's Avengers will feature some of your favorite heroes, including Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, and Hulk.

In a cinematic teaser released a few years ago, the aftermath of a devastating battle is shown. Although no heroes are seen, we do see Thor's hammer Mjolnir, Captain America's shield, Bruce Banner's glasses, and Iron Man's arm. The teaser then ends with the hashtag "Reassemble."

The same teaser also features an ominous voiceover, which talks about the time of heroes being over.

"They say the time of heroes is over," the voiceover says. "That if you're different, you're dangerous. But I know the truth. The world will always need heroes. We just need to reassemble."

According to Marvel, the game will be "packed with all the characters, environments, and iconic moments that have thrilled longtime fans of the franchise." Marvel's Avengers will also feature a completely original story and introduce a universe that will span multiple games.

It's unclear if the game will crossover with Marvel's Spider-Man, which was released last year by Insomniac Games as a PlayStation 4 exclusive.

What characters are in Marvel's Avengers?

No official roster of characters has been revealed, but the developers have teased some big names set to make an appearance. Once a full roster is revealed we'll be sure to update this post.

  • Thor
  • Iron Man
  • Captain America
  • Hulk

In addition to the characters mentioned above, the first teaser features a voiceover from a female character. Her identity is still unknown.

Does Marvel's Avengers take place in the MCU?

Based on what we know, it looks like Marvel's Avengers will be separate from the storyline in the MCU. Although we'll see some of the same characters, they likely won't have a likeness to the actors who play these heroes on the big screen.

Plus, Marvel has said that the project is a completely original story and will introduce a new universe. It's possible we may revisit some of the iconic moments seen in the movies, but by and large Marvel's Avengers will have nothing to do with the movies.

Insomniac Games took a similar approach to Marvel's Spider-Man. In that title, gamers were treated to an original story focused on a new Peter Parker (with an awesome original suit!). We fully expect Marvel's Avengers to adopt a similar approach. It will feel familiar but also completely fresh.

Marvel's Avengers gameplay

No gameplay footage or information has been shared, so we're in the dark on this one. Will the game feature turn-based gameplay? Will it be more like Marvel's Spider-Man, where players level up their character by knocking out strongholds and finding collectibles?

It's also unclear if Marvel's Avengers will be an open-world title, or if it'll take a more linear approach. We're also not sure if the game will be single player or allow friends to team up and complete missions together. With so many characters possibly in the mix, it would make sense for there to be a multi-player angle.

We'll have more gameplay information to share once details are revealed.
