Aquaman 2 is swimming back into theaters in 2022

Get ready to jump back into the water with Aquaman. Warner Bros. announced on Wednesday that a sequel to the most successful DC movie ever will be swimming into theaters 2022.

Aquaman opened in theaters in December and instantly became a smash hit at the box office. Eventually it grossed $1.1 billion, surpassing the total of any previous DC movies, including movies focused on Batman. It seemed like a no brainer a sequel was going to get made but the studio kept quiet on the subject until now.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Aquaman 2 is set to arrive December 16, 2022 with Jason Momoa returning to reprise his role as the swashbuckling hero. What isn't set yet is if director James Wan will return as director. Wan has been cagey about returning for the sequel, though we wouldn't be surprised if Warner Bros. is doing everything in its power to bring him back. Wan did a good job of setting up a sequel with Black Manta surviving his battle with Aquaman.

It's unclear if any of the rest of the cast including Amber Heard, Nicole Kidman and Willem Dafoe will return to reprise their roles.

Besides Aquaman 2, Warner Bros. has multiple projects like Wonder Woman 1984, Birds of Prey, and The Batman in the works that will follow Shazam! which will make its way into theaters in April.
